Africa was a land of empires: Ghana, Mali, Songhai, Swahili, Zimbabwe, and the Kongo. Throughout history you are going to see an underlying theme; power is not created nor destroyed, it transfers. All empires must trade and conquer to hold onto their power and the empires residing in Africa are not exempt from this common rule. In this unit you are going to become familiar with Africa’s 8 climate zones, terrain, peoples, and trade. Today, Africa is one of the riches countries in the world in resources but its people are the poorest. How did this happen? We are going to explore the answers to this apparent paradox by studying Africa and its history.
