Cosimo de Medici
The collapse of the Roman Empire led to the Dark Age where knowledge was lost or forgotten. Power transferred to feudal lords and the church. Wars divided these lords and kings but Pope Urban II would unite Europe in a war against the Muslim Turks to retake the Holy Land. Eight Crusades would be fought over two hundred years with the Christians unable to take and hold Jerusalem. People would soon begin to distrust the Catholic Church and kings for their many attempts to control the masses. When trade re-opens with Muslim countries and China, new technology and developments would open the eyes of the European world: The compass would later spurn on an Age of Exploration, gun powder would give rise to new weapons such as the Matchlock (first rifle) and canon, the Chinese block printing press would give Europeans the blue prints by which they would make their first printing press (Johann Gutenberg’s Printing Press). The knowledge that was first made available to the masses via the printing press was the Bible and Martin Luther’s 95 Theses which attacked the corruption of the church and would cause the Reformation. In this unit we will cover all of the things aforementioned but we cannot learn fully about the Renaissance without covering the spirit of where it was birthed. Florence Italy is known as the birth place of the Renaissance and the patron families and artists will revolutionize the world.
