Some of the fiercest warriors the world had ever known are the Japanese samurai and this is due to its warrior code of Bushido. In this unit we are going to learn about Japan’s warrior code and look at Japan’s early history which we know little of. The reason for this lack of knowledge was due to the fact that the Japanese did not develop a written language until Buddhism was brought over from Korea in the 6th century CE. We are going to examine one of Japan’s greatest statesmen in Prince Shotoku who was so influential that the Japanese Buddhist today call him Buddha incarnate. We will also look at the Sengoku Jidai (Warring States Period) where we will learn about the 3 principle unifiers of Japan in Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Tokugawa Ieyasu. Lastly you will learn how to write Haiku’s which is the style that Japanese literature and poems are written in.
